Department of Psychology
Academic Research Days
By far, the most easily identified aspect of the academics role is that of teacher: giving lectures and tutorial classes, setting assignments and exams, and, of course, marking. This is an important part of the academic role. An equally important, yet often underappreciated aspect of this role is scholarly research. In fact, academics are expected to devote the same amount of time they spend on teaching-related activities to such research activities as writing-up journal articles and book chapters, preparing grant submissions, and designing studies. Nevertheless, the pressing nature of most teaching and administration duties means that research often takes a back seat.
The Department of Psychology recognises the key role that research plays in both academic life, and in strengthening the international reputation of the department and the university. This year the Department of Psychology has implemented a new initiative which recognises the importance of research in academic life-Academic Research Days. Each academic staff member has nominated one day each week that they will set aside to devote exclusively to scholarly activities. On their nominated research day, academic staff should not be interrupted (unless by prior arrangement).
