Measuring Beliefs about Life
Information Statement
If you are 18 years or over you are invited to participate in a study of factors that influence treatments for psychological distress. The aim of the study is to develop and validate a scale reflecting general beliefs about life.
The study is being conducted by Lauren McLellan to meet the requirements for PhD. Should you have further questions contact the investigator on 9850 8627 or lauren.mclellan@mq.edu.au. This study is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Lorna Peters of the Department of Psychology at Macquarie University (9850 6727).
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete some questionnaires about how you generally respond to various situations you might encounter throughout life and beliefs about life. Brief demographic information will also be collected.
It is anticipated that participating in this study will take 10-15 minutes of you time. By participating in this research you will be eligible to go in the draw to win a monthly AUD$50 prize offered by Macquarie University, Department of Psychology through their Psychology research webpage (a link to this webpage will be provided at the completion of the survey). Should you choose to enter the draw your details will not be identified with your responses provided for this study.
Any information or personal details gathered in the course of the study are confidential. No individuals will be identified in any publication of the results. Only the two named researchers will have access to the original data, and this will be coded using participant numbers only. This is an anonymous survey.
Participation is voluntary.
In the unlikely event that you find some of the questions in the survey disturbing we strongly advise those affected participants to contact Life Line telephone counselling service on 131114 or NSW Health on 9391 9000 for information or a referral to your local community health centre.
You will be able to obtain feedback regarding the results of the study upon its completion by contacting the investigator using the above details.
The ethical aspects of this study have been approved by the Macquarie University Human Research Ethics Committee. If you have any complaints or reservations about any ethical aspect of your participation in this research, you may contact the Committee through the Director, Research Ethics (telephone (02) 9850 7854; email ethics@mq.edu.au). Any complaint you make will be treated in confidence and investigated, and you will be informed of the outcome.
