Background Social Skills Group Information:

The Rod Power Psychology Clinic has been running a social skills group for a number of years. Recently the program has been re-modeled based on the well-researched Australian social skills program ‘STOP THINK DO’ (Peterson, 2002). The program includes sessions for both children and parents.

Sessions for children cover topics such as:
• Getting to know people
• Understanding and communicating feelings
• Solving social problems
• Assertive, co-operative and friendly behaviours
• Dealing with teasing and bullying

Sessions for parents cover topics such as:
• Goal setting
• Understanding and accurately observing child behaviour
• Reinforcing the positives
• Active listening
• Helping children with social problem solving
• Behaviour management
• Helping children deal with bullies

The sessions run after school for 10 weeks. Each session is 1.5 hours. Generally 3 therapists will facilitate the child program, while 1 or 2 therapists administer the parenting program. It should be the same parent attending each week for the parenting sessions. The program costs $250 (non-refundable $50 payable at the initial assessment, the remaining $200 payable on the first night of the group). Please phone the clinic on 9850 8000 to make an appointment for an initial assessment.
