Primary School Children (years 1-6, aged 7-12)For Children in SydneyOur current interest for primary schoolers is to examine which treatments work for which families. If you have an anxious child, in years 1 through 6, they may be suitable to take part in our study. After an assessment that will determine if the clinic programs are suitable for your child, you will be randomly offered one of two different conditions. We offer two drug-free manual-based treatment programs that are conducted in 10 sessions over 12 weeks. In both programs, children and parent(s) meet with the therapist. One treatment involves an additional 5 session stress management program for all parents living with the child. The purpose of the current study is to determine whether also helping parents to manage their own stress and anxiety improves the effects of treatment for anxious children. Each of the treatments included in the study has been chosen because of its potential effectiveness and because it is based on established scientific principles. If you would more information on how to become involved at the clinic click here or call the clinic on (02) 9850 8711 and speak with one of our intake officers. For Children Outside SydneyThe Child Anxiety Rural Outreach Program offers an outreach service that allows children who live in rural and regional Australia to access our assessment and treatment services without needing to travel from home. Families are provided with written materials and talk with a psychologist over the telephone instead of attending face-to-face sessions at our clinic. The Rural Outreach Program is open to primary school children who are at least 8 years old. A parent or guardian must be willing to be involved in implementing the program at home. The program has been offered since 2000, and initial evaluation has shown overwhelming success for the children and families who have participated. In 2008 the Australian Government funded a further 3 year research program where different amounts of telephone contact will be evaluated to see which leads to the best outcome.
