Parenting Programs for Pre-Schoolers and Anxious Parents

Creating Confident Kids

‘Creating Confident Kids’ is a program designed for parents of 2-6 year olds who want to know how to assist their kids in developing self-confidence and healthy self-esteem. It aims to help parents answer questions such as:

  • What can I do to help my child have self-confidence and healthy self-esteem?
  • How do I give my child a sense of responsibility?
  • How do my own thoughts and beliefs affect my parenting?

The program takes a positive approach, building on strengths and skills that already exist in families. By the end of the program parents will leave with both knowledge and practical skills that will help their children develop self-confidence, and create strong and healthy families.

Topics covered include:
• Helping children become independent and responsible
• Building families with clear roles and boundaries
• Having reasonable expectations of ourselves as parents
• How beliefs about parenting and about ourselves impact on our parenting
• Helping kids develop self-confident behaviours
• Leading the way – being role-models for our kids
• Helping kids handle the negative messages they get from others
• Strong emotions – helping children learn how to manage their feelings
• Creating resilience in your family

Program Format
The program will involve weekly two-and-a-half hour sessions over 8 weeks, and will be presented in a small group format so parents can share their experiences and ideas. Each program is run by a specialist clinical psychologist experienced in the area of child and family issues.

For Parents of Preschoolers

This early intervention program has been developed for parents with children aged 3 to 5 years old who show signs that they may develop excessive anxiety later in life. These early signs can include excessive shyness with adults or other children, difficulty separating from their parents, and fear of unfamiliar situations or environments. If these behaviours persist they can interfere with a child's ability to make friends, and their participation in school and family activities.

Our parenting programs are not part of a current research study and there is a cost associated with completing the treatment program. We try to keep this to a minimum and it is highly competitive with other private services. It is hoped that a research program for this age group will begin in the near future.

When involved in treatments at the clinic you may at some point be asked to participate in our ongoing research activities into anxiety in young people. What we learn from your involvement can help us treat other children who seek help with us in the future and helps to better our understanding of why anxiety exists.
