Focusing on the Neglected Area of Mental Health in Ageing

Mental Health Week 9 – 15 Oct 2011

Free public lecture

Dr Viviana Wuthrich in the Centre for Emotional Health, Department of Psychology, Macquarie University is focused on understanding and improving the mental health of older Australians. She is giving a free public lecture on anxiety and depression in seniors during Mental Health Week to highlight the importance of this issue.

In this free public lecture she will cover the basics of mental health in older adults focusing on anxiety and depression. She will talk about the common symptoms, the consequences of these problems left untreated, and comment on why this areas is so neglected in older adults.

In a world first, Dr Wuthrich and her team are focusing research on the psychological treatment of anxiety and depression in adults over the age of 60. While, age 60 is not old by any means, from about 60 years of age, our knowledge about anxiety and depression in older adults lessens and she is trying to correct this.

Her research is very timely given the ageing of the world’s population. By 2050, over a quarter of Australia’s population will be over the age of 65 and studies show 47% of older adults who met criteria for major depression also met criteria for an anxiety disorder.
